James S. Remis, CPA
Jim has had many important
accounting, auditing, consulting and financial management responsibilities
during his lengthy career in public accounting. He has been involved
in accounting standards-setting and has worked in the trade association
environment.
Professional Experience
Federman, Lally & Remis LLC - Farmington, CT (1991 to present)
Founding Partner
Jim has been Partner in charge of audit and consulting operations
of Federman, Lally & Remis. Jim works with clients in a wide
variety of industries while specializing in manufacturing, retail
and Not-for-Profit organizations. Jim’s professional activities
also include forensic accounting and litigation support activities.
Prior to joining Federman, Lally & Remis, Jim served as director of the national Touche Ross public sector practice and was Partner-in-Charge of the Audit Practice in Hartford, CT.
Before joining Touche, Ross & Co., Jim served as Director
of the Technical Services Center of the Governmental Finance Officers
Association (GFOA) and Executive Director of the National Council
on Governmental Accounting (NCGA). GFOA is the national trade
association of government finance professionals. NCGA was the
governmental accounting principles standard setting arm of the
GFOA and was the predecessor of the Governmental Accounting Standards
Board (GASB).
Education and Certifications
Master of Arts in Economics and Bachelor of Business Administration
in Accounting
Jim is a CPA in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, West
Virginia and Illinois.
He has been a consultant on GAAP Accounting for several states
including Connecticut, Mississippi, Louisiana and West Virginia.
He is a frequent speaker — discussion leader for accounting,
auditing and business related programs for the American Institute
of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), State CPA groups, national
law firms and other organization and is a recipient of the Connecticut
Society of Certified Public Accountants (CSCPA) and AICPA outstanding
discussion leader awards.
Professional and Community Service
Jim has been a member of numerous steering committees for AICPA
national conferences, is a member of the AICPA Not-for-Profit
Experts Panel, served on the Governmental Accounting Standards
Board Organizing Committee and many Federal and State audit-related
task forces such as the Single Audit Implementation Policy Committee
of the Comptroller General of the United States and the Connecticut
State Single Audit Implementation Committee. Jim is the current
Vice President—Finance of the Board of the Hartford Symphony
Orchestra. In this role he chairs the finance committee and serves
on the executive, investment, union relations and programming
committees. He also serves on various committees related to the
Yale School of Music and their summer music festival in Norfolk,
CT.
